Think LOCAL! Join me on a NEW whirlwind trip to my favorite East L.A. Mexican food haunts: tortillarias, taco joints, and traditional markets. I've led culinary tours throughout Mexico for over 15 years, and during this time scoped-out the best of the best Mexican regional food spots right here in our own backyard. We meet at a centrally located market. Everyone gets to taste corn tortillas made by the old pat-pat method from just-made masa (corn dough) and the opportunity to purchase a dozen (or two) to take home, where, at the same place buy a kilo of sizzling carnitas (the real deal!). This unassuming spot makes my "numero uno" taco in L.A., and that's saying a lot! — it also sells great tamales to take home. We then shop for Mexican mole and pipían pastes, cookware, cowboy hats, boots, and holsters, and traditional sweets. Our next stop is to taste a cemita, the fabulous, regional sandwich from Puebla. The tour visits a bakery with excellent pan dulce and fresh breads. We sit down together and enjoy a lunch at one of my favorite East L.A. joints packing fabulous flavors! Everyone returns to the market to roam aisles and discover bargains on tropical produce and products from various Latin American countries. Tour ends about 3pm. Students may carpool (I help match drivers/riders if desired) or meet at the first stop. Wear comfortable shoes and bring insulated bags to carry purchases back home. I supply meeting spot, itinerary with directions, locations, etc. one week before the tour date.
